PEYTONs of Illinois

My book does not cover the lineage of the PEYTONS of Aquia who settled in Illinois. I assume they were the descendants of the Thomas Bronaugh PEYTON from Kentucky who died at Coles County, Illinois in 1842, as he had thirteen children. His father had served as an Ensign during the American Revolution (page 115) and then went to Kentucky afterwards. Thomas and his wife Charlotte are cited on page 116, and his lineage is documented back to the PEYTONS of Aquia, Virginia and to England.

The PEYTONs found in Illinois could also be descended from the Joseph PEYTON (page 125), who had a son, Joseph PEYTON, Jr. who went from Kentucky to Coles County, Illinois after 1840.

Elizabeth Rowzee

On page 498 of Reverend Hayden's "PEYTON, of England and Virginia" in "EXCURSUS - ROWZEE" he quoted Colonel John Lewis PEYTON as having given the name of his ROWZEE grandfather as "John ROUSE." However, a more careful reading of Reverend Hayden's "EXCURSUS - ROWZEE" leads me to conclude that, whoever Grandfather JOHN ROUSE was, he was not in fact, the father of Elizabeth ROWZEE.

Therefore, the father of the Elizabeth ROWZEE who married John PEYTON as given on page 43 of PEYTONs Along the Aquia, I now believe to be incorrect. I conclude that her father was Edward ROWZEE. Because he did not mention daughter Elizabeth ROWZEE in his 1719 will, but she was mentioned in the 1725 will of her stepfather, would give her a birthdate of circa 1720.

"Concord" the Old Waller Home at Aquia Creek, Virginia, belonged to the family of Elizabeth ROWZEE's first husband. She may be buried in the adjoining cemetery, as WALLER family tradition gives. Another view of this home is pictured on the back cover of PEYTONs Along the Aquia.

Mary Ann Payton of Arkansas

Mary A. PEYTON, born about 1830, in Tennessee, appears on the 1860 Census of Franklin Township, Sevier County, Arkansas, with her mother Milly PEYTON, age 54, and brothers, Ephraim H. PEYTON 28, and Marcus A. PEYTON 24. Her parents appear on pages 160, 161 of PEYTONs Along the Aquia, where her PEYTON lineage is traced back to the first PEYTONS who came from England and settled on the Northern Neck of the Virginia Colony.

Mary Ann PAYTON of Sevier County, Arkansas married Cyrus BAILEY of Hempstead County, Arkansas on 9 November 1860, in Sevier County, Arkansas. Cyrus BAILEY was a Confederate soldier who served in Arkansas's First (Monroe's) Cavalry.

Private Charles PEYTON

Valentine PEYTON & Sarah HALE

Valentine PEYTON married Sarah HALE in 1789, at Fauquier County, Virginia. They are both cited with their parents on pages 70, 71 of the "Revised and Updated" Second Edition of PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy. Valentine's lineage is further documented back to the the PEYTONs of Aquia Creek, Virginia who were descended from the PEYTONs of England who came with William the Conqueror in 1066.

Reverend Hayden also cited the marriage of Valentine and Sarah PEYTON in his "Virginia Genealogies" of 1891: ("PEYTON, of England and Virginia", ISBN 1438282710, page 563).

Why All the Craven PEYTONs?

The question is often posed as to the connection of the PEYTON family of Virginia to the CRAVEN family. There was a CRAVEN family in England and also one in Virginia, however, a familial connection with the PEYTONs has not been documented. Reverend Hayden in his "Virginia Genealogies" of 1891 ("PEYTON, of England and Virginia", ISBN 1438282710, page 499), addressed the question back then when he wrote of Craven PEYTON of Aquia Creek as "the first of the line in Va. to be named Craven, after the son of Sir Robert PEYTON." Craven PEYTON (1664-1738) was a prominent PEYTON of London who worked at the British mint with Sir Isaac NEWTON. He continued the "Craven" name in his own descendants (see pages 485, 486 of Reverend Hayden's book cited above).

The prominent Craven PEYTON of London descends from the same line of ancient PEYTONs as do those PEYTONs in Virginia who were named for him, which lineage is documented on pages 15, 25 of the "Revised and Updated" Second Edition of PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy. The first Craven PEYTON of Virginia, mentioned by Reverend Hayden in 1891, appears on pages 70 through 72 of the new "keepsake" edition in hardcover.

Henry "Bully" PEYTON of Tom's Creek

Henry "Bully" PEYTON (1794-1848) of Cabell County, West Virginia, appears on pages 139, 167 of PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy. His birth place on page 167 is probably incorrect, as Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encylopedia, 1884, page 399, states that he and his wife Polly, arrived in Cabell County, from Amherst County, Virginia, in 1803, although Cabell County was not formed from Kanawha unti 1808. Nevertheless, Henry PEYTON is unlikely to have been born at Kanawha. Both he and his wife are descendants of the early PEYTONs of Aquia Creek and their lineage is documented in the aforementioned genealogy book.

Nelson PEYTON of Kentucky and Indiana

Nelson PEYTON of Kentucky and Indiana was the son of Lewis PEYTON a Revolutionary War soldier of Amherst County, Virginia. I have found no documentation for other children of Lewis PEYTON, although according to his Revolutionary War Pension (S.17003) it appears there were definitely others. Lewis PEYTON has been proven as a DAR Patriot, but the only child of Lewis PEYTON in their records is the aforementioned Nelson PEYTON who is proven by the pension:

"it appears that Lewis PAYTON was born March 8, 1763. While a resident of Amherst County, Virginia he enlisted a short time after the surrender of Cornwallis and served seven months as a private in Captain Kirkpatrick's Company, Colonel Hawes' Virginia Regiment. ... In 1854, Nelson PAYTON one of the children of soldier, was a resident of Harrison County, Indiana. The names of other children and that of the soldier's wife not given."

The PEYTON children of Lydia Price SNYDER are descended from a soldier of the American Revolution, Michael SNYDER (1755-1815). During the war, Michael and his wife were living in Culpeper County, Virginia where he was recorded on the Culpeper Class List, List of Classes in Culpeper County for January 1781. Michael SNYDER is DAR Ancestor #A106947.

Lydia Price SNYDER, her PEYTON husband and their children, along with Lydia's parents, Michael SNYDER and Martha STIGLER, appear on pages 110, 111 of the Second Edition of "PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy."

Ensign George PEYTON Military Warrant #3437

PHILIP PEYTON of Northumberland, Virginia

PHILIP PEYTON is mentioned on pages 25, 26 of "PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy (Second Edition).” He was dispatched from Bristol, England on 30 August 1665, to serve four years in Virginia to THOMAS WHITE. Two years later, on 20 October 1667, he is documented as an "indentured servant" to RICHARD NELMES in Northumberland County, Virginia, when neighbors complained to the court that he and fellow servant NATH. GARNER were infected with leg sores and "very much neglected by their sd Master who taketh nor care to see ye sd sores Cured." By 1670, PHILIP PEYTON was a free man when he was accused by other servants and a slave women, at Northumberland County Court, of being the mastermind of multiple hog stealings from his former master. By 1672, "PHILL PAYTON" appears in Northumberland County, Virginia court records as a witness.

I see no evidence that this PHILIP PEYTON of Northumberland County, born before 1655, in England, was connected to the PHILIP PEYTON of Aquia Creek. That Philip PEYTON, of Westmoreland and later Stafford County, Virginia, appears on pages 22, 23 of "PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy (Second Edition).” Nor do I see any connection to the PEYTON family of Gloucester County, Virginia.

By 18 June 1701, we find another PAYTON in Northumberland County records: "SUSANNAH PAYTON, servant to JANE YARRATT, haveing had a Bastard Child by WILLIAM DUGARD, another servant of the said JANE ..."

Francis PEYTON of Alexandria

Until very recently, the DAR records had credited the Francis PEYTON on page 117 of the "Revised and Updated" Second Edition of PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy, as a Colonel during the Revolutionary War. DAR has now amended that stance, stating that his service as a Colonel should be credited to his uncle, Colonel Francis PEYTON, who is documented on pages 72 and 73 of said book. Francis PEYTON of Alexandria is also cited on page 500 of PEYTON, of England and Virginia, 1891, by Reverend Horace Edwin Hayden. The DAR states that there is no credible evidence that this Francis PEYTON served during the Revolutionary War. However, there was a Private Francis PEYTON who could be him or the son of Colonel Francis PEYTON.

The tombstone of this Francis PEYTON is at Saint Paul's Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia. It is pictured at Find-A-Grave and shows a DAR marker from the Elisha Dick Chapter of Virginia, which also identifies him as a Colonel, now considered in error by DAR.

Peytons of All Hallows the Less

There are two typos on page 4 of PEYTONs Along the Aquia, Second Edition. Of the PEYTON children christened at All Hallows the Less Parish, Mary PEYTON was christened on 1 April 1593 (not 7 April) and Elizabeth PEYTON was christened in 1594 (not 1694).

Henry Lindsey Peyton of Cabell County

Two years ago at "Blogsome Genealogy" I wrote the story of Private Henry PEYTON of Barboursville, Virginia who twice had his credit for Revolutionary War service voided. In the first case he fought for reinstatement until the U.S. Congress passed the bill pictured above. The second case was recently by the Daughters of the American Revolution and then it was member Cynthia Vance who came to the rescue of her ancestor by submitting papers to reopen his lineage. She did this by submitting the above U.S. Congress Bill HR 1150 from 1839, with her lineage papers. I received the following comments and press release from Keith Vance: "I have composed the following for press release and would appreciate your comments, changes or additions. Your book helped support the application tremendously."

BARBOURSVILLE PATRIOT RECOGNIZED BY ACT OF CONGRESS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

In the beginnings of our great republic, the capitol building in Washington, DC, housing the congress, was called the “people’s house.” Citizens could bring grievances with their government, no matter their station in life, for a hearing.

Such was the case of Private Henry Peyton, born January 19, 1760 in Culpepper, Virginia. As did many adventuresome youth of his day, Henry joined forces with country cousins, brothers, uncles and fathers, rebels all, to attend the front line and watch the defeat of King George and his superior forces. After the war, Henry Peyton and his family were some of the first settlers of Cabell County, West Virginia, responsible for many local descendants.

In the 1830s provision was made to grant pensions to all that gave evidence of service in the “Great American Revolution.” Henry submitted his statement of service and was given recognition and pension, as a veteran of the war.

All appeared well, until claims of fraudulent petitions were filed with the government office and investigations took place. Henry seems to have been a colorful character at the local tavern in Barboursville and perhaps a bit boisterous concerning his war exploits. Loud talk of one’s heroism was considered the rudest of manners. Stiff necked neighbors gave a bad report to the investigator and Henry’s submission as a Revolutionary War patriot was stamped fraudulent.

Henry, understanding the rights for which he had fought and for which many had died, began petitioning recognition and justice from the government. With the help of an affidavit from magistrate W McComas and other good citizens’ recommendations, the government was finally convinced of the injustice toward Private Henry Peyton and on February 16, 1839 HR 1150 was passed by the House of Representatives. A history of Henry and his letters may be found in the “Lambert Collection” housed in the old library building on the campus of Marshall University.

More recently Edna Barney, a genealogist of the Peyton family, has published the following:

“During his lifetime, Henry Peyton petitioned several times to restore his good name, and finally on 16 February 1839, an act of the U.S. Congress reinstated his pension and made it retroactive to 1831. To add further insult to the soldier’s memory, the death date of 1836, on his grave marker that was placed by a Revolutionary War lineage society, was wrong. Henry Peyton was alive in 1839 and still writing letters to Washington as late as 1842.”

Henry‘s resting place is Henry Peyton Cemetery in Barboursville, West Virginia.

Edna Barney continues:
"As of today, even though a number of descendants of three different children of Henry Peyton had joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) under his Revolutionary War Service, his line has been closed, as the statement of fraud has been 'rediscovered' in his pension record. Once again as genealogists, we see how difficult it is to correct errors of many years ago that were put in 'official' writings.

"It will now be necessary for a descendant of patriot Henry Peyton to join the DAR under his lineage and include a copy of HR Bill 1150 as proof of his service..…hopefully, someone will be able to once again reinstate the good “Patriot” name of Henry Lindsey Peyton of Amherst and Cabell Counties, Virginia.”

The family and descendants of Private Henry Peyton are very pleased to announce that on October 3, 2009 the DAR reopened Henry’s line through application by Cynthia Alexandra Vance and her presentation of HR Bill 1150. Cynthia is the sixth great granddaughter of Henry Peyton. Cynthia is a 19-year-old college student in San Diego, California and now the newest member of the Cahuilla Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, in Palm Springs, California. Cynthia’s grandmother Louella Vance, great aunt Rheabel Vance and cousin Aimee Vance Cartwright all reside in Barboursville.

Cynthia Vance’s lineage to her 6th great-grandfather, Henry Lindsey Peyton, was proven through a variety of source documents. Census records dating back to 1860 proved many parent-child relationships. Birth, marriage and death records provided dates and places of residence, as well as family connections. Records prior to 1850 were harder to come by, because census records pre-1850 only show heads-of –households, not the names of other family members. So, the use of West Virginia church and cemetery records helped to connect Peyton family members together.

Finally, if not already proven, DAR must have proof of a patriot’s service to the American cause. This can be found through the military records maintained by the National Archives. Pension and bounty records are also useful, as they often give the names of other family members, and show where patriots lived after the Revolutionary War. We used a Bill of Congress, written in 1839, that found Henry Peyton to still be alive, and deserving to receive a reinstated pension that same year.

Cynthia Vance, proud as ever of her American and West Virginian heritage wonders, “What did they do before the internet. I’ve learned so much about West Virginia and the fighting, wars, revolutions, feuds and massacres. It is a miracle that any of us are here today.”

PEYTONs of Caroline County, Virginia

The photograph above is of the historic PEYTON - BROCKENBROUGH House, circa 1795, in Caroline County, Virginia. It was the home of Valentine and Elizabeth PEYTON who are featured on pages 153, 154 of PEYTONs Along the Aquia, Second Edition.

Their daughter, Sarah Jane PEYTON, was at home on the afternoon of April 23rd, 1865, when President LINCOLN's assassin, John Wilkes BOOTH, arrived with David HEROLD. Sarah Jane initially permitted BOOTH and HEROLD to enter her home, but then decided because the man of the house was not at home, it was inappropriate for her to be alone with the two man. She therefore sent them on their way to the neighboring GARRETT Farm, where BOOTH was shot dead.

PEYTON descendant Leven POWELL and his wife, Sarah HARRISON, are on pages 68 and 69 of PEYTONs Along the Aquia, Second Edition. Mrs. Sarah POWELL's death date of 20 October 1812, is inscribed upon her tombstone in the Sharon Cemetery, Middleburg, Virginia.

Someone wrote asking about members of the HACKETT family of Buckingham County, Virginia who were descended from PEYTONs of Aquia. On page 189 of the new "Revised and Updated" Second Edition of PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy, I included seven children of Virginia H. DAMRON and her husband James Thomas HACKETT. In addition to those children, there were three more: Sarah E. HACKETT born 1882, Thomas L. HACKETT born January 1891, and Maimie E. HACKETT born March 1898, all born in Virginia.

Sarah - Consort of Francis PEYTON

At Find-A-Grave, there are photographs of the gravestone of Sarah, the wife of Francis PEYTON. She died 22 June 1849,and was buried at Saint Paul's Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia. Sarah and her husband and some of their children are on page 117 of the "Revised and Updated" Second Edition of PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy, a new "keepsake" edition in hardcover.

There is a bit of a discrepancy between the death date on the tombstone and Reverend Hayden's comments on page 500 of PEYTON, of England and Virginia, 1891, that the will of Sarah PEYTON was written in November of 1848, and probated 13 January 1849, at Alexandria, Virginia.

The Find-A-Grave site identifies her as Sarah WEST, which is not correct. Reverend Hayden on page 500 of PEYTON, of England and Virginia, 1891, speculated that Francis PEYTON's wife was "PROBABLY" Sarah WEST. ("Sarah, prob. dau. of Hugh ... WEST.") More recent discoveries, including a bible record and deeds have verified Francis PEYTON's wife as another "Sarah." Sarah, the daughter of Hugh WEST, was married to a PEYTON relative of Francis PEYTON, and she is documented on page 114 of my book.

The tombstone of Sarah's husband, Francis PEYTON of Alexandria is also at Find-A-Grave where there is a DAR marker from the Elisha Dick Chapter of Virginia.

Robert PEYTON of Gloucester, Virginia

The Robert PEYTON who immigrated to Virginia and settled in Gloucester County, Virginia is documented on page 468 of Reverend Hayden's PEYTON, of England and Virginia, 1891. Reverend Hayden includes three children of Robert, but not the name of Robert's wife. All records of Gloucester County prior to 1820, were destroyed when the Clerk's office burned. During the War Between the States, all Gloucester County records after 1820, were removed to Richmond for safekeeping and were lost when Richmond was burned.

The descendants of Robert PEYTON's children are followed by Reverend Hayden on page 468, and pages following.

William PEYTON of Cincinnati

The William PEYTON who died in Cincinnati, Ohio, whose wives were Nancy HOWARD and Catherine BARNHART, has never been proven as a Revolutionary War patriot for DAR membership. He did serve in the war, as is documented by pension records initiated by his second wife. He likely has descendants today, as he had children. William PEYTON and his wives appear on page 139, of the newly released Second Edition of "PEYTONs Along the Aquia Genealogy".

Celia PEYTON's age and relationship to the PEYTON family of Gloucester County, Virginia is revealed when she was appointed executrix of her uncle Robert PEYTON's 1759 will. It is all explained on pages 470 and 471 of PEYTON, of England and Virginia, 1891, by Reverend Horace Edwin HAYDEN. Her sister Ellen PEYTON is cited along with brother Stephen PEYTON born 1756.

William PEYTON of Bourbon County, Kentucky

William was documented by his grandson in Reverend Hayden's "Virginia Genealogies" of 1891 ("PEYTON, of England and Virginia", ISBN 1438282710, pages 470, 471), who gave his date and place of death. William PEYTON is a proven DAR patriot, having served in the Gloucester County, Virginia militia during the American Revolution. His grandson said he "carried in his body to his grave a British bullet." Those who can prove descent from him qualify for membership in both Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
